Mukwonago HS Leverages Virtual Learning to Create Original Radio Play
As the coronavirus struck the United States, many students wanted an escape from quarantining and navigating the challenges of virtual learning. For fine arts students in particular, many of whom saw their plays, musicals, and concerts canceled, the transition to online classes was a particularly unique challenge since dramatic arts involves working in live groups.
Still, when Mukwonago High School canceled live classes in March and the MHS English/Drama Department’s Theatre Company class saw their entire semester’s curriculum of live community performances upended, they pulled off a whirlwind retooling of their entire curriculum to create an original half hour radio play in partnership with radio station Kettle Moraine Community Radio, Inc. WFAQ-LP 101.3 FM.
The partnership was a natural one, and MHS drama teacher Julie Hanisch and radio station director Todd Ciske were eager to explore the sudden opportunity to allow students a continued chance to create and perform for the public.
Ciske shared,“We've been serving the Mukwonago listening area for over twelve years now and tout ourselves as being ‘The Nation's Music Source.’ This makes it an amazing place to share the talents these students have.”
Many of the students agreed that a radio play was a great replacement for the original curriculum of live community shows. The radio play gave a new experience and perspective to the students who hadn’t heard much about radio plays and production. Students learned about old time radio, radio plot genres, voice acting, radio ads, Foley sound effects, scriptwriting, and editing audio. Following two weeks of radio play lessons, they divided into teams of voice actors, sound artists, script writers, and directors to hold auditions and create the production, a 1950s era radio mystery called, ‘The Bunker Under Hope Springs.’
“Every part of this radio play, from plot creation to sound editing, was produced almost entirely by students,” said teacher Julie Hanisch, “I’m an old-time radio fan myself, and I was troubled that COVID-19 had eliminated any chance the students had to perform for the public. When we switched gears and threw ourselves into the radio play project, I was thrilled to see how well the students took ownership over the work so we could still perform together as a class in spite of being apart. To be able to tell the class their work would be aired on live radio was doubly rewarding, and we’re so grateful to be able to work with WFAQ-LP FM 101.3 as a community partner.”
The play’s plot, conceived by MHS sophomore Zach Simpson, is a 1950s mystery where listeners can follow a thrilling story of teenagers sleuthing to uncover the murders of their fellow students during a nuclear air raid. Unsure of what is happening as they take refuge in their school’s underground bunker, the group begins to crack as murders are committed. A murderer is among the group, but can listeners discover who?
The students were equally eager to share their excitement about turning a quarantine-inspired disappointment into a memorable class performance:
“Although COVID-19 affected our class, my classmates and our teacher turned lemons into lemonade by producing our radio play. This play showcases many elements of theatre, including speaking roles and crew member roles. The production was a true joy to be a part of and I am very grateful for the opportunity that I was given,” said sophomore Jackson Baumann.
Alyssa Bartelak, junior, added, “I personally believe that doing this project during a pandemic made the experience very new and interesting. It brought change from just doing regular online assignments with it being interactive and fun. It was challenging to put it together without being able to meet in person, but I think that we pulled it together well and that the final product was great!”
One of the scriptwriters and audio editors, junior Cole McCormack, added, “It was a unique experience. We made something out of nothing. Overall, I’m very proud of what we’ve done during these difficult times.”
Radio listeners tune in to Kettle Moraine Community Radio, Inc. WFAQ-LP FM 101.3 on Sunday, June 21 and Thursday, June 25 at 1 PM or 7 PM to listen to the original production’s 30-minute broadcast which includes three of the students’ original radio commercials as well.
